Snowflake Surges Past Competition and Nearly Doubles Customer Base for 2016

Another record year for customer acquisition, product innovation and partner expansion

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Jan. 12, 2017 – Snowflake Computing, the only data warehouse built for the cloud, today announced another year of record growth in 2016 as it continues to beat enterprise data warehouse and big data vendors by supplying the best technology and the best architecture at the best price. Snowflake increased its customer base by 90 percent and executed nearly two billion customer queries, totaling more than one million hours of cloud processing time. All of this performance happened at speeds and with an ease of use that transformed the customer experience when compared to all other data warehouses.

In addition, customer data storage in Snowflake surged by over 300 percent in 2016, with multiple customers storing more than one petabyte of data and still experiencing the fastest and most affordable data warehouse on the market. All of Snowflake’s innovation and success in 2016 culminated in December, when Snowflake was ranked the #1 cloud data warehouse, beating all of the largest data warehouse vendors in the market across six product attributes.

“We’ve made major strides in 2016 to deliver on our promise of providing the most powerful, affordable, accessible and flexible cloud-built data warehouse for enterprises big and small,” Snowflake CEO, Bob Muglia said. “Through significant product developments, partnerships and programs, and further building our world-class team, we’ve done just that. We continue to knock down the technology, access and cost barriers to storing all of your data in one location for fast, affordable and limitless data analytics. At the end of the day, nothing should stop you from being a data-driven enterprise.”

Snowflake’s 2016 competitive, product, customer, partner and corporate milestones include:

Competitive momentum

  • Beat competitors, including Google BigQuery, Teradata, IBM dashDB, HPE Vertica, Microsoft Azure SQL, SAP HANA and Oracle Exadata, to take the top spot in Gigaom Research’s review of enterprise cloud data warehouses: “Sector Roadmap: Cloud Analytic Databases 2017.”
  • Reduced cloud storage pricing by 80 percent to make Snowflake the most affordable data warehouse available. Promised continued price reductions to match S3 pricing from Amazon Web Services, Snowflake’s cloud storage provider. Organizations of all sizes no longer have a cost barrier to storing all of their data in one location.

Product innovation

  • Announced enterprise-grade security features, including support for HIPAA compliance and federated authentication to deliver a new standard in built-in security for data platforms.
  • Issued a comprehensive set of features to eliminate the manual and administrative overhead and complexity associated with managing and protecting data warehouses for multi-structured big data. These features include automatic concurrency scaling, results caching, time travel, and adaptive data management.

Customer acquisition

  • Acquired new customers from a variety of industries including HotelTonight, PDX, Rue La La, Telltale Games and University of Notre Dame.
  • Announced Snowflake On Demand™, a fast and simple sign-up process for data users of any type to have easy access to the most affordable and effective data warehouse. Available since November, Snowflake On Demand has dramatically increased the pace at which customers sign up and start using Snowflake.
  • Established new cloud deployment of Snowflake in the EU (Frankfurt) region to address European customer demand.

Ecosystem expansion

Corporate momentum

Snowflake’s momentum demonstrates the growing realization among enterprises that traditional data warehousing solutions, on-premises and cloud, are obstacles to becoming data-driven organizations. Frustrated by the challenges of outdated technology, businesses are shifting to Snowflake to acquire the best architecture, technology, service and price.

Snowflake Beats Competition to Become #1 Cloud Data Warehouse

Comprehensive analyst report puts Snowflake above world’s largest IT vendors

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Dec 20, 2016Snowflake Computing, the data warehouse built for the cloud, today announced that it beat competitors, including Google BigQuery, Teradata, IBM dashDB, HPE Vertica, Microsoft Azure SQL, SAP HANA and Oracle Exadata, to take the top spot in Gigaom Research’s review of enterprise cloud data warehouses.

The report, “Sector Roadmap: Cloud Analytic Databases 2017,” reviewed all vendors across Gigaom’s six product characteristics described as “Disruption Vectors”:

  • Robustness of SQL
  • Built-in optimization
  • On-the-fly elasticity
  • Dynamic Environment Adaption
  • Separation of compute from storage
  • Support for diverse data

Snowflake won the top spot with a score of 4.85 out of a possible 5.0 across all vectors. The other eight vendors averaged a total score of 3.5. The vendor that ranked the lowest scored a 2.6. Moreover, Snowflake was the only standalone product considered in Gigaom’s analysis that is not part of a much larger vendor. Gigaom recognized Snowflake on multiple fronts as the clear leader among top data warehouse vendors:

“Snowflake is built as a cloud analytic database from scratch. Its independent development, and focus on analytic features, has enabled Snowflake to hit the mark on all of our Disruption Vectors,” the report states. “With superior performance and the most hands-off model of ownership, Snowflake is the epitome of a data warehouse as a service. The model, cost, features, and scalability have already caused some to postpone Hadoop adoption.”

The Gigaom report also noted the benefits of cloud solutions versus what on-premises systems offer. And Gigaom’s analysis also concluded that significant differences still exist among varying cloud data warehouses.

“Conventional analytical databases and data warehouse systems are becoming unwieldy, due to their limitations of scaling their architecture and the correspondingly large capital outlay and administrative burden…Fully realized, a cloud analytical database solution will propel the capabilities of a company way ahead, but be forewarned, not all platforms leverage this breakout capacity to the fullest.”

The report also noted “key takeaways” for organizations to consider when assessing their next data warehouse purchase:

  • Options for cloud platforms meet, and sometimes exceed, the same usage capabilities as on-premises equivalents.
  • Due to economics and functionality, the cloud can be a given in most data warehouse selections in 2017 and beyond.
  • A tight integration with the cloud is imperative to long-lasting, cost-effective success for the analytic workload in a cloud data warehouse.

“We’re honored to be Gigaom’s top choice among enterprise, cloud data warehouse solutions,” Snowflake CEO, Bob Muglia said. “Gigaom’s criteria are congruent with what customers tell as to why they choose Snowflake. Whether they’re a global enterprise, mid-tier company, or an organization in the early phases of growth and innovation, they select Snowflake to solve their current data analytics problems, and to enable innovative strategies to streamline their organizations, lead their industries and develop deep customer loyalty.”

Rue La La Deploys Snowflake to Personalize Member Experience with Data-Driven Insights

Popular e-commerce site delivers the offers customers want, when they want

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Dec 13, 2016Snowflake Computing, the data warehouse built for the cloud, today announced that Rue La La, an innovative e-commerce destination known for connecting world-class brands with the next-generation shopper, chose Snowflake to help learn from customer behavior to improve their overall experience.

Ranked #8 on Internet Retailer’s 2016 Mobile 500 List[1], Rue La La is a Members-only, e-commerce site bringing high-end brands to its more than 16 million Members. With limited quantities of each style, Rue La La evokes an urgency to make quick purchasing decisions before the product is gone.

Rue La La stores structured information in an existing enterprise data warehouse and used another platform to house its big data streams, including email and clickstream activity from its website and mobile app. Rue La La chose Snowflake to unify these two data sources to gain a 360-view of its customers. For example, Rue La La better targets its Members with customized emails that deliver the most relevant content. This new and enhanced perspective helps identify Members’ needs and desires to deliver a personalized and engaging experience.

“Processing terabytes of data with the ability to scale our data warehouse up and down, and on demand, was much more challenging with our previous on-premises technology,” said Erick Roesch, director of business intelligence and data warehousing at Rue La La. “Snowflake has become not just our analytics platform that empowers us to make data-driven decisions, but a critical component of our everyday operation.”

Snowflake is widely integrated throughout Rue La La’s business. Marketing teams utilize it to quickly identify the performance of each campaign and fine-tune efforts. Live site visitation and purchasing data allow planners to assess product interest and customize the site to provide each Member their own unique shopping experience.

“Snowflake customers are discovering a new realm of possibilities as they harness insights derived from more and more data,” said Bob Muglia, CEO at Snowflake. “We are honored to help Rue La La leverage the power of data to improve the customer experience through personalized marketing.”

Snowflake Announces Availability on AWS Marketplace

Support for SaaS Subscriptions on AWS Marketplace enables self-service access to powerful data analytics in the cloud

Nov 29, 2016

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Nov. 29, 2016 – Snowflake Computing, the data warehouse built for the cloud, today announced immediate availability of the Snowflake Elastic Data Warehouse through AWS Marketplace in conjunction with the launch of SaaS Subscriptions on AWS Marketplace.

AWS Marketplace is an online store that helps customers find, buy, and immediately start using the software and services they need to build products and run their businesses. Visitors to the marketplace can quickly access ready-to-use software and pay only for what they use.

“AWS Marketplace strives to offer customers the best possible selection of software products from ISVs to enable customer choice,” said Barry Russell, GM of Global Business Development, AWS Marketplace and Catalog Services, Amazon Web Services. “Our customers want solutions like Snowflake that are built on AWS and designed with the cloud in mind, and their support of SaaS Subscriptions on AWS Marketplace makes it even easier for customers to procure and deploy Snowflake for their data and analytics needs.”

Snowflake, the data warehouse built for the cloud, was founded with the vision of eliminating the barriers to data analytics. Snowflake’s data warehouse built for the cloud delivers the performance, concurrency, and simplicity needed to support today’s diverse data and analytics.

“Snowflake delivers on the promise of self-service data warehousing for data analysts,” said Walter Aldana, vice president of alliances at Snowflake. “Just as Snowflake makes data warehousing self-service possible, AWS Marketplace is removing the complexity and delays associated with the purchasing process. Organizations can now more easily and rapidly start taking advantage of the cloud for all of their data initiatives.”

Snowflake’s data warehouse is built on the following innovations and capabilities that break down the technology and architecture barriers that have limited the ability of data professionals to easily leverage the cloud for data analytics. Snowflake has delivered the following defining qualities of a data warehouse built for the cloud:

  • Complete SQL database – Snowflake supports the tools millions of business users already know how to use today.
  • Zero management – Snowflake reduces complexity with built-in performance so there’s no infrastructure to tweak, no knobs to turn and no tuning required.
  • All of your data – Customers can analyze multiple petabytes of structured and semi-structured data (JSON, XML, AVRO) to quickly extract critical insight.
  • All of your users – An architecturally unlimited amount of concurrent users and applications can gain access without eroding performance thanks to Snowflake’s multi-cluster warehouse technology.
  • Pay only for what you use – Snowflake’s cloud-built solution scales storage separate from compute, up and down, transparently and automatically.

Snowflake’s data warehouse is available immediately via AWS Marketplace.

Snowflake Reduces Data Warehouse Storage Pricing by 23 Percent

As promised, Snowflake matches Amazon’s latest cloud storage price reduction, lowering Snowflake’s price by a total of 80 percent over the past month.

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Nov. 22, 2016 – Snowflake Computing, the data warehouse built for the cloud, today announces an additional 23 percent price reduction for its compressed cloud storage. This represents Snowflake’s second price reduction in a month. With today’s reduction, Snowflake customers have experienced an 80 percent total price reduction in the past 33 days.

The smallest organizations to the largest enterprises continue to benefit from Snowflake’s customer-centric strategy of enabling them to affordably store all of their data in one location. Snowflake already delivers the only data warehouse built for the cloud with unmatched performance, concurrency and simplicity. With these further price reductions, Snowflake remains the most affordable data warehouse.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), Snowflake’s cloud storage provider, on Monday announced new pricing for its S3 Standard Storage. Snowflake, as previously promised, has lowered its own storage pricing to match Amazon’s. This continues Snowflake’s strategy as the first data warehouse solution provider, cloud or on-premises, to provide customers the true cost benefits of cloud object storage.

From December 1, 2016, Snowflake’s new US storage pricing will:

  • Reduce compressed capacity storage pricing to $23/TB/month – a 23 percent savings.
  • Reduce compressed on-demand storage pricing to $40/TB/month – a 20 percent savings.
  • Effectively reduce uncompressed storage pricing to $5/TB/month or less (assuming 5x compression).

In October, Snowflake announced significant price reductions for its US storage, matching Amazon’s prices. With Monday’s additional pricing announcement, Snowflake customers have received significant total price reductions over the past month:

  • 80 percent savings for compressed capacity storage
  • 73 percent savings for compressed on-demand storage

Snowflake CEO Bob Muglia said in October that Snowflake would pass onto customers the savings of any future storage price reductions from Amazon. Today, Snowflake has made good on that promise and will do so for all future price changes. “From day one, Snowflake’s architecture was designed to deliver the best technology and the best pricing,” Muglia said. “Snowflake enables customers to dial their storage and compute up and down with the click of a button so they only pay for what they use. Snowflake is the most affordable data warehouse in the world, allowing customers to store all their data in one location, while reaping the benefits of the most powerful and easy-to-use data warehouse solution on the market.”

In addition to Snowflake’s US pricing, Snowflake announces new pricing for its recent EU (Frankfurt) data storage deployment:

  • Reduce compressed capacity storage pricing to $24.50/TB/month – a 24 percent savings.
  • Reduce compressed on-demand storage pricing to $45/TB/month – an 18 percent savings.
  • Effectively reduce uncompressed storage pricing to $5/TB/month or less (assuming 5x compression).
